Horlicks
Horlicks is traditionally served before bedtime or to nourish convalescent people.
My personal favourite is when its used as a flavouring in a mikshake (preferably a double-thick milkshake). To make this, add the following to a food blender and mix really well until there are no lumps or clumps:
3 or more tablespoons of Horlicks (original) to taste
1 cup of vanilla ice cream.
3-4 tablespoons of milk.
Pour into a tall glass and enjoy.
Normally, you would mix it with hot milk and drink it like a hot drink.
It is not sold in German stores but you can buy it online. Just make sure to only buy the original flavour as they make other variants which arent as nice, in my opinion. There is a British shop in Frankfurt if you prefer.
According to Wikipedia:
Horlicks is a sweet malted milk hot drink powder developed by founders James and William Horlick. It was first sold as "Horlick's Infant and Invalids Food", soon adding "aged and travellers" to their label. In the early 20th century, it was sold as a powdered meal replacement drink mix.
In Britain, Horlicks is commonly consumed as a drink near bedtime, and is marketed as an evening drink; in contrast, it has been marketed as a breakfast drink in India where it is far more popular.
It is a mixture of wheat flour and malted wheat (46%), followed by malted barley (26%). As of 2019, the other ingredients include dried whey, calcium carbonate, dried skimmed milk, sugar, palm oil, salt, Anti-Caking Agent (E551), and a mixture of vitamins and minerals. The palm oil used is non-hydrogenated and certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.
